【Meaning】
The character 房 (Fang) literally means "room" or "house." According to the Shuowen Jiezi, its original meaning refers to the chambers located on either side of the main central hall of a residence. Etymologically, "Fang" is closely related to 方 (Fang). In Oracle Bone Script, the lower component "Fang" resembles an ancient agricultural tool called a Lei (耒). The Lei was the curved wooden handle of the Si (耜), an ancient plow used for turning soil. To stab the earth was called Tui (pushing), and to lift the soil was called Fang. The "Fang people" were named after their ritual worship of this tool; thus, the original meaning of Fang was a sacred storage place for plows.
【Origins】
From Dan Zhu, Son of Emperor Yao: This lineage originates from the descendants of Dan Zhu, the son of the legendary Emperor Yao.
The Origin of "Abdication" (Chanrang): Emperor Yao famously believed that "The world belongs to all people, not to one man." Seeking a successor capable of leading the people through natural disasters, he chose not to pass the throne to his son Dan Zhu, but instead abdicated to Shun, who had performed great merits. This marked the beginning of the Abdication System and the concept of "The World for the Public."
The State of Fang: After Shun ascended the throne, he re-enfeoffed Dan Zhu in Fang (present-day Suiping, Henan) as the Marquis of the Fief of Fang. This later became the State of Fang, which was eventually annexed by the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period.
Founding of the Surname: Dan Zhu’s son, Ling, was known in history as Fang Ling. His descendants adopted the name of their state and ancestral title as their surname, becoming the Fang clan.
