【Meaning】
The character 丛 (Cong) originally referred to clumps of grass or a thicket/forest. It later extended to mean gathering, clustering, or assembling. In bronze inscriptions (Jinwen), the character "Cong" is a top-bottom structure composed of various forms of cogon grass, signifying densely growing vegetation.
【Origins】
From Cong Zhi, Leader of the Zhi State: This lineage originates from the era of Emperor Yao. At that time, there were four ancient states: Chong (modern-day Dengfeng, Henan), Zhi (modern-day Yicheng, Hubei), Xu (modern-day Zibo, Shandong), and Ao (modern-day Shanggao, Jiangxi). The leader of the Zhi state was named Cong Zhi. After Emperor Yao conquered these four small states, Cong Zhi became a subordinate official under him. His descendants adopted his name as their surname.
From the Xiongnu Tribe (Jin Midi): This branch traces back to Jin Midi, the General of Chariots and Cavalry during the Western Han Dynasty. His descendants migrated to Congjiaxian (modern-day Wendeng, Shandong). They subsequently adopted the name of their residence, "Cong," as their surname.
