Therefore, the mat was a ritual item used for receiving guests. In Oracle Bone Script, the character depicts a mat-like shape under a shelter (厂). Later, "Xi" became a general term for woven utensils made from reeds, bamboo splints, or cattails.
【Origin】 The surname originates from the Ji (已) clan and is descended from the family of Xi Shi, the teacher of the legendary Emperor Yao. During the era of Emperor Yao, there was an elderly man who sang while "striking the soil" (a famous folk activity). His surname was Xi, and Emperor Yao honored him as a teacher (Shi). His descendants adopted his surname to commemorate their ancestor.
