The Zhou Dynasty: The Zongbo was in charge of national sacrificial rituals and ceremonies, also known as Taizong or Shangzong (equivalent to the later Minister of Rites). The Taizongbo assisted the Son of Heaven in managing clan affairs and was the head of the "Six Ministers."
Adopting the Title: Families who held the hereditary position of Zongbo during the Zhou Dynasty adopted their ancestor’s official title as their surname, becoming the Zong clan.
