Interpretation of the Kong (孔) Clan Totem

Definition of the Character: The original meaning of "孔" (Kong) is "opening" or "to pass through." The character is composed of "子" (Child) and "乙" (Yi). In antiquity, Yi was a migratory bird—the Swallow. In Bronze Script, the character depicts a swallow flying toward a child, symbolizing the divine arrival of a new life or a spiritual connection.

Origin: 1. The Shang Dynasty Legend: Xie, the ancestor of the Shang tribe, was said to be born after his mother swallowed a swallow's egg, leading the family to be granted the surname Zi. Fourteen generations later, Tang the Perfect founded the Shang Dynasty. His name was Lu and his courtesy name was Tianyi. His descendants combined the tribal surname "Zi" with the "Yi" from his name to create the Kong surname. 2. The Legacy of Kong Fu Jia: During the Western Zhou, a high official in the State of Song (modern-day Shangqiu, Henan) named Jia held the courtesy name Kong Fu. Historically known as Kong Fu Jia, he was killed during internal strife. His great-grandson Kong Fangshu fled to the State of Lu (modern-day Qufu, Shandong). His descendants adopted "Kong" as their surname.
