Interpretation of the Xia (夏) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "夏" (Xia) refers to the hot summer season. During this time, the climate is warm, and all living things progress from revival to full growth. For ancient people, the concept of summer included the natural landscape of lush greenery and dense shade, thus giving the character the extended meanings of "greatness," "maturity," and "grandeur."
Origin: 1. Yu the Great passed the throne to his son, Qi, establishing the Xia Dynasty. The capital was located in places like Yangcheng and Yangdi. By the reign of King Jie, the capital was at Zhenxun (modern-day Gongyi, Henan). After the dynasty was overthrown by Tang of Shang, the royal descendants adopted the name of their state as their surname, originally calling themselves "Xiahou" (Descendants of Xia), later simplified to Xia. 2. During the Spring and Autumn period, when the State of Chen was ruled by its 16th monarch, Duke Xuan of Chen, he had a son named Zixi (courtesy name Zixia). Zixia's grandson, Zhengshu, adopted his grandfather's courtesy name as his surname, becoming Xia Zhengshu. His descendants have continued the Xia surname to this day.
