The original meaning of Yuan (原) is the source or headwaters of a river. It is the original form of the character 源 (source). As spring water gushes forth, it takes on the meaning of a "fountainhead." In Bronze Inscriptions (Jinwen), the character is composed of components representing a "cliff" (厂) and a "spring" (泉). In Small Seal Script (Xiaozhuan), the spring holes beneath the cliff are depicted as three "eyes," representing numerous springs converging to form the source of a river.
The State of Yuan: At the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the 16th son of King Wen of Zhou, known as Yuan Bo (the Earl of Yuan), was enfeoffed in Yuan (anciently called Zhiyi, northwest of present-day Jiyuan, Henan). His descendants held the title of Earl for generations. Historically known as Yuan Bo Guan, he established the State of Yuan.
Historical Context: During the Xia Dynasty, King Shao Kang moved the capital to Yuan. After King Wu of Zhou overthrew the Shang Dynasty and established the Western Zhou, he granted the 16th son of King Wen the title of Earl of Yuan. Initially, he served as a High Official (Qing Dafu).
Transition to Jin: During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Yuan was conquered by the State of Jin. The descendants of the Earl of Yuan were later enfeoffed to Xian Zhen, who became known as Yuan Zhen and served as a high-ranking minister (Shangqing) of the State of Jin, with his fief located in the city of Yuan. His descendants subsequently adopted the name of the state (or city) as their surname.
