【Meaning】 The original meaning of Chu (儲) is "to wait" or "awaiting." It carries the connotations of being in reserve or preparation. From this, it extends to meanings such as "accumulation" and "storage" (as in chubei, reserves). It also has an extended meaning of "deputy" or "assistant" (as in chujun, the crown prince or heir).
【Origin】
Derived from the Ancient State of Chu: In the north of Ganzhou, Jiangxi, there is Mount Chu (also known as Mount Chutan), which was the site of the ancient State of Chu. Descendants adopted the state and place name "Chu" as their surname.
Derived from Ancestor's Courtesy Name: During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a high official in the State of Qi whose courtesy name was Chuzi, and who was known to have associated with Mencius. His descendants adopted his courtesy name "Chu" as their surname. The earliest origins of the Chu clan are in the regions of Qi and Lu (present-day Shandong), which serve as a primary source for the Chu surname today.
