【Meaning】
The character 佘 (She) originates from the word for snake (蛇, pronounced shé). Because the image of a snake was considered unfavorable or taboo, the character 佘 was adopted as a substitute. Consequently, 佘 is used exclusively for geographical names and as a surname.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage traces back to You Yu, a high official (Dafu) of the State of Qin during the Spring and Autumn period. It is a phonetic evolution of the surname Yu (余). In ancient scripts, the character 余 existed but 佘 did not; the pronunciation of Yu shifted phonetically toward the sound of "snake." Before the Han Dynasty, there are no historical records of the "She" surname in the Western Zhou, Spring and Autumn, or Warring States periods. The character 佘 emerged later as a transformation of 余.
From Place Names: After the Han Dynasty, there was a Mount Tu (荼山, located southeast of modern-day Qingpu District, Shanghai). Residents living around the mountain adopted the mountain's name as their surname (Tu), which evolved into She (佘) over time.
