Definition & Meaning

Wei (位) translates to "position" or "rank." Its original meaning refers to the sequential arrangement and status of officials, elders, or nobles within a royal court, an industry, or a specific region. It symbolizes order, hierarchy, and recognized social standing.

Origins

The surname originated from the Xiongnu (a tribal confederation of nomadic peoples). During the reign of Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, King Xian of Shache (in the Western Regions) resisted the Xiongnu. Weishi, a younger brother, was enfeoffed as the King of Yutian (Khotan) by his eldest brother, the Xiongnu King.

Later, Weishi was killed. His son, Rong (also recorded as Xu), fled and surrendered to the Han Dynasty, where he was granted the title of Marquis of Shoushou (Marquis of Guarding Integrity). His descendants adopted "Wei" as their surname to commemorate their lineage.
