The surname originated during the end of the Xia Dynasty. A woman of the Youshen clan found a baby while gathering mulberry leaves by the Yi River (Yichuan). She named the child Yi. This child grew up to be Yi Yin, the legendary sage minister and founding figure of the Shang Dynasty.
Yi Yin (originally of the Si (姒) surname, a descendant of the Great Yu) lived by the Yi River (present-day Yichuan, Henan) and thus adopted Yi as his surname.
He famously assisted Tang of Shang in defeating Jie of Xia, overthrowing the Xia Dynasty and establishing the Shang Dynasty.
