Interpretation of the Yu Clan Totem
[Definition] In ancient Chinese scripts, the character "Yu" (于) was interchangeable with "Yu" (於) and "Wu" (烏 - crow/black). In ancient times, the characters "Hu" (呼), "Xu" (吁), "Hu" (乎), and "Yu" (于) shared similar forms and meanings. According to the Shuowen Jiezi: "Yu (于) means Yu (於), depicting the gradual expansion or release of breath." It further describes "Wu" (烏) as: "Wu is a filial bird; it is a pictograph."
[Origin] During the great enfeoffment in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, the second son of King Wu of Zhou (Ji Fa) was granted the former site of the Shang Dynasty State of Yu (located in present-day Yutai Village, Qinyang, Henan). He was known as Yu Shu and established the State of Yu (邘). His descendants adopted the state's name as their surname, originally written as "Yu" (邘). Because the characters "Yu" (邘) and "Yu" (于) were homophones and used interchangeably in ancient times, some descendants later removed the "city" radical (阝) to become the "Yu" (于) clan.
